Audition Information for Fall 2008

General Information
Auditions and interviews are held at the beginning of every fall semester. Dates and times are Sunday, August 24th, 3-6 pm and Monday, August 25th, noon-11 pm. Additional auditions and interviews may be held at the beginning of the spring semester at the discretion of the officers and conductor. All male Notre Dame and Holy Cross undergraduate and graduate students of all abilities are welcome. In the Club's opinion, singing in the shower is documentable singing experience!

Admission to the group is based on a musical tryout with the conductor and an interview with the executive officers of the Club. The selection of new members is a joint decision by the Director and the officers of the Club. It would be helpful to have a vocal piece prepared for this audition, however an impromtu rendition of "Amazing Grace," "America," or "Happy Birthday" is just fine. If you prepare a piece with accompaniment, bring an extra copy of the music. An accompanist is available but will not be able to share music with you.

Location (Note Change!)
DeBartolo Performing Arts Center for audition. It's the large building at the south end of DeBartolo Quad, close to the south gate of campus and east of the Eck Center and Hammes Bookstore. Crowley Hall of Music for interview. It's right next to LaFortune Student Center, on "God Quad."

What to Bring:

  • Your own voice
  • Prepared piece if desired (this is DEFINITELY not a necessity)
  • Sense of humor

What to Expect
The Audition. The audition itself, though pretty informal, is basically a chance for our director, Dan Stowe, as well as some other representatives of the music department, to hear your voice. They are not looking for polished, professional singers — they are looking to find out things like your general range, whether you can match a pitch played on a piano, what kind of sight reading ability you have (none is fine, they just want to know), and whether you can keep a simple tune (again, a prepared piece is always a good thing, but NEVER a requirement).

The Interview. Interviews are a chance for the officers of the club to get to know you a little more personally than what you can write in a few lines about your "vocal experience." They are fun and are not intended to be stressful. Relax, enjoy your interview.

The Bottom Line. Try out for the Glee Club! You can check out our web site here to find out more about some of the things we do, but this is barely the tip of the iceberg. Don't second-guess yourself for lack of experience or any other fears — most of us had those same worries, and we're all glad we ignored them!
